Coat of Arms

Coat of Arms

The coat of arms is designed as a quartered “European” shield in 2006 at the time of the university establishment, each section carrying a distinct meaning.

  • First Quarter: The “European” shield, on the first, Bordeaux-colored field, features six silver (white) open books, symbolizing the six faculties that existed in 2006 (at the time of the University’s establishment). Six silver open books on a maroon field symbolize the six faculties of the university. The books, inscribed in Latin, highlight the three fundamental freedoms that form the foundation of the institution: Academic Freedom, Freedom of Conscience, and Freedom of Choice.
  • Second Quarter: A maroon cross with four Bolnur-Katskhuri crosses in the resulting quarters depicts the Georgian national flag, signifying the university’s public status.
  • Third Quarter: On a field of silver and maroon, two keys crossed in the form of St. Andrew’s cross represent the university’s mastery of teaching methods.
  • Fourth Quarter: Against a maroon field, three ermine-trimmed professors’ hats symbolize the past achievements of the Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani and Ilia Chavchavadze Institutes, their unification, and the future of the new university.

Beneath the shield, a banner bearing the motto LIGAMUS, meaning “we unite” – expresses the university’s motto and mission: to unite education and research – Research-Teaching Nexus, to preserve and accumulate knowledge, to create new knowledge, and to share it with students and society at large.
